Brother Requests ITC Investigation

(August 21, 2019)  Print OEM Brother has asked the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to open a patent infringement investigation against more than 30 companies.

In a document filed with the ITC on 19 August, Brother claimed that 32 firms – mostly imaging supplies exporters, importers and resellers, but also including manufacturer Aster Graphics – are importing and selling products in the US that infringe on a number of its patents. The OEM is seeking an exclusion order to block the respondents from selling the alleged infringing products on the US market.

Aster responded by saying it would “vigorously defend its products against this complaint” and asserting that “the accused Brother cartridges are produced using 116 of our own design patent solutions”.

US-based Clover Imaging Group – which is not one of companies accused by Brother – didn’t miss an opportunity to see Brother’s actions as a business opportunity. “Partner with Clover, the manufacturer you can trust for 100% IP-cleared products,” the company said on social media. (OPI)
